This is a maximal test carried out whilst running on a treadmill in the laboratory and wearing a mask connected to a metabolimeter. The equipment allows us to determine the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max, the global index of cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency) and the relative anaerobic ventilatory threshold. Moreover, upon specific request, it is possible to measure the running economy from the ratio between speed and oxygen consumption. When taken repeatedly over time, the test allows us to monitor improvements in cardiovascular efficiency and to identify training patterns based on heart rate (a key factor when creating customised training programmes).
