A test carried out whilst cycling on an exercise bike in the laboratory during incremental exercise to maximum in accordance with Mader’s protocol. During the exercise, a set of measurements are taken in relation to the concentration of lactate in the blood (via subsequent droplets drawn from the earlobe) with increasing power loads to establish the anaerobic threshold. The test is used to monitor the athlete’s level of fitness throughout the season and to identify training patterns with reference points based on heart rate and/or power.
